What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?

Posted: Thursday, 24th August 2006, 3:19 pm

Recognition of prior learning (or RPL) is the acknowledgement of a person’s skills and knowledge acquired through previous training, work or life experience.

Pragmatic Training will measure this against the course in which you are enrolled. If you already possess some of the skills and/or knowledge taught in the course, you may be granted credit for a subject, module, course or qualification.

What is the Australian Quality Training Framework?

Posted: Tuesday, 29th August 2006, 9:49 am

The Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) was developed by the Australian National Training Authority in conjunction with States and Territories, the Commonwealth and industry and endorsed by Ministers for vocational education and training on 8th June 2001.

The key objective of the AQTF is to provide the basis for a nationally consistent, high quality vocational education and training system for Australia. It encourages greater flexibility and responsiveness on the part of training organisations as well supporting a competitive national training market.

The AQTF consists of two parts:
  1. Standards for Registered Training Organisations: and
  2. Standards for State and Territory Registering / Course Accrediting Bodies.
The AQTF provides the foundation for the mutual recognition of training organisations, qualifications and training products throughout Australia and incorporates revised registration arrangements for training organisations. New recognition arrangements are underpinned by strengthened quality assurance measures, including nationally agreed registration requirements and rigorous monitoring and audit processes.

Further information on the AQTF is available on the ANTA home page of their website at http://www.anta.gov.au.

What are the Qualification levels with the AQTF?

Posted: Tuesday, 29th August 2006, 9:52 am

National qualifications are defined in accordance with the Australian Qualifications Framework which provides a single, coherent framework for all recognised qualifications from Senior Secondary Certification to PhD. Within the vocational education and training sector the following nationally recognised qualifications may be issued:
  • Certificate I
  • Certificate II
  • Certificate III
  • Certificate IV
  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Vocational Graduate Certificate
  • Vocational Graduate Diploma
Under the AQF, qualifications issued in the VET sector must lead to the achievement of a package of competencies. Where there are endorsed national competencies, the AQF further requires that any qualification issued must lead to the achievement of these competencies. The qualifications arising from Training Packages comprise particular combinations of endorsed competencies that are meaningful in the industry or enterprise context and packaging against AQF qualifications.

Training Packages may include a range of qualification from across these levels, including more than one qualification at a particular level where this is necessary to accommodate the needs of different industry streams or sectors, or to support multiple entry and exit points.

What is User Choice and New Apprenticeships?

Posted: Tuesday, 29th August 2006, 9:56 am

User Choice is a national policy that aims to make the training system more responsive to clients (businesses and people interested in New Apprenticeships). User Choice funding pays for the provision of some New Apprenticeships training. It supports greater opportunity by clients to:
  • choose between training providers (public and private);
  • decide on the provider that best meets their needs; and
  • negotiate with the provider on aspects of the training such as the structure and content and where and when it will be delivered.
As well as improving the options for clients of the training system, the rationale for User Choice is underpinned by competitive neutrality principles.

New Apprenticeships
The Australian Government currently manages 72 contracts with New Apprenticeships Centres to deliver New Apprenticeships Support Services in 22 regions across Australia. The New Apprenticeships Centres are able to provide clients with information about User Choice and the registered training organisations delivering particular qualifications through User Choice funding.

More information on New Apprenticeships and New Apprenticeships Centres is available fromwww.newapprenticeships.gov.au.
