This course will equip you to provide training and support to people with disabilities to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of independence and community participation. It also prepares you for the role of a team leader or supervisor which may involve assessing client needs, planning care, supervising a work team and co-coordinating administration.
Workers in this occupational group work in residential group homes, training resource centers, day respite centers and open employment services, other community settings and clients' homes. These workers apply knowledge and skills gained through qualifications and/or previous experience to provide training and support to people with disabilities to enhance their ability to achieve greater levels of independence, self reliance and community participation. These workers report to service managers and may liaise with health professionals and other service agencies.
Workers in this group may work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a limited number of lower classified workers.
Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.
There are fourteen units of competency which make up a CHC40302 — Certificate IV in Disability Work. Competency is required in all 14 units. There are 10 compulsory units and four electives*.

Workplace training gives students the opportunity to develop practical job skills, such as interacting with people in a professional environment, developing communication skills, as well as an insight into particular job roles and responsibilities. Overall, students have found workplace training enhanced their chances of getting a job and succeeding at it.
Following placement, all students are required to provide a signed Pre-Assessment Interview form, Workplace Assessment form, Record of Outcome form and also the Workplace Agreement form to verify they have successfully demonstrated the practical components of each of the required competency outcomes. A qualified manager/supervisor must sign the forms as validation.
There are no specific academic requirements. Previous work experience and a strong interest in this work are required.
Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.
Participants successfully completing this course may apply for entry into Certificate IV in Aged Care Work, Certificate IV in Service Coordination (Ageing and Disability) or Diploma of Community Services (Lifestyle and Leisure).
As part of the Australian Qualifications Framework this program is nationally recognised. On successful completion students will be awarded the Certificate IV in Disability Work.
