CHC30102 - Certificate III in Aged Care Work

Course Objectives

This certificate course provides you with a holistic approach to caring for the Older People within our community. This course is designed to equip you to provide physical and social support to elderly individuals and people with a psychological disability in hostels, group homes and community settings.

With a strong practical focus, you will be taught the basic skills and competencies required in this career, including:

  • Participate in the work environment
  • Provide personal care
  • Provide support to an older person
  • Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial needs
  • Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
  • Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
  • Communicate appropriately with clients and colleagues

  • Provide physical assistance with medication
  • Orientation to aged care work
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers

This training is based on the National Community Services/Aged Care competency Standards and reflects nationally endorsed industry requirements.

Career Opportunities

This course provides training for aged care workers in hostels, nursing homes, group homes, private homes, labour market programs for the aged and health related programs for the aged.

We are being invited to place students in hospital environments and they are being employed in hospitals to provide personal care for patients in acute medical/surgical wards and in palliative care situations. This certificate enables people to gain employment in Home and Community Care funded agencies who have frail aged and younger people with disabilities in their client group.

Course Content / Structure

There are thirteen units of competency which make up a CHC30102 — Certificate III in Aged Care Work. Competency is required in all 13 units. There are 480 nominal course hours. There are nine compulsory units and four electives*.

Note: There is a required level of numeracy and literacy skills to be able to complete this unit. Students interested in this unit will need to satisfactorily meet the requirements in an entrance test.
HLTFA2A Apply First Aid (Level 2 First Aid) at an extra cost of $100 (1 day program - HLTFA1A is a pre requisite.

Industry Placement

An industry placement of approximately 200 hours will be undertaken during the course. The course coordinator will arrange the location, time and duration of the placement.

Assessment Methods

This course includes 13 written assessments that you complete as part of your course work and then forward to your tutor. Once your tutor has marked and graded your work they will send it back to you with their comments. 5 workplace assessments are also included as part of your course.

Competencies will be assessed based on your workplace demonstration of skills and knowledge, written assessments and classroom activities.

Workplace Assessment

Workplace training gives students the opportunity to develop practical job skills, such as interacting with people in a professional environment, developing communication skills, as well as an insight into particular job roles and responsibilities. Overall, students have found workplace training enhanced their chances of getting a job and succeeding at it.

As a mandatory part of this course, students are required to seek workplace training. Workplace training and assessment is the gathering and evaluation of evidence during normal work activities in order to determine whether a required element within a competency has been achieved. Workplace assessment will entail a combination of recognition, observation, questioning, discussion and third party validation.

Following this, all students are required to provide a signed Pre-Assessment Interview form, Workplace Assessment form, Record of Outcome form and also the Workplace Agreement form to verify they have successfully demonstrated the practical components of each of the required competency outcomes. A qualified manager/supervisor must sign the forms as validation.

Selection Criteria

There are no specific academic requirements. Previous work experience and a strong interest in this work are required.

Skills Recognition — Exemptions/Transfers

Students may be eligible for exemptions/transfers on the basis of previous qualifications.

Further Study Links

Participants successfully completing this course may apply for entry into CHC40102 - Certificate IV in Aged Care Work, Certificate IV in Health (Nursing), or Bachelor of Nursing.
